Chislet Remembers

On Sunday 11 November 2018, Chislet lit the village beacon to commemorate the end of World War One.

Below is a speech made by Leslie Gosling at the occassion:

“I’ve lost my Parade Ground voice I’m afraid.

Few of you have any conception of what war is actually like. I can tell you. It is 90% utter boredom and 10% stark terror!

And my Regiment served in the Desert as you heard. One young officer was awarded the VC. He loaded the Gun against oncoming tanks until his left arm was shot off and still he stayed in the seat and fired at the oncoming tanks.

You know where I went after that: Italy and Normandy – and I ended up in Hamburg and I was one of the first to enter the city of Hamburg. The colonel sent me ahead to find billets for the Regiment because the war was nearly finished: and I can tell you that the bombing in Hamburg – our British bombs – razed many buildings to the ground – and I had to weave my jeep around piles of rubble and the stench of dead underneath was appalling!

That’s what war is like and I hope we never have another one..

Finally, I am not going to keep you waiting, I’ll give you the words of the exhortation – you have heard it before –

“They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them”

Leslie Gosling 11.11.2018
